Teacher's Choice Proposal

My focus class for VTS is an Intro to Art class at Fort Zumwalt East High School. I will be long-term subbing for this group starting in December. Therefore, prior to my VTS discussions, the students were new to me, and I was new to them. This class is made up of 9th, 10th and 11th grade students...some have an interest in art, and others do not. There are a mixture of personalities and abilities in this class. Some students still remain silent during discussions, and some willing participate each time.

Here are my 4 image choices I am deciding between for my teacher's choice VTS lesson:

Welcome Footsteps by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema

by Gregory Crewdson

Soft Watch at the Moment of First Explosion by Salvador Dali

Girl at Mirror by Norman Rockwell

  2. Kenzie,

Your class seems familiar to me because it sounds like the kind of art classes I experienced in high school. It will be interesting to see the progress they make with the VTS discussions throughout the year. The images you chose are varied and interesting. I immediately noticed evidence of diversity, narrative (especially in the first two images), and expressive content, I think these images will be intriguing to this diverse age group. Good luck!

  3. I really love the first two for VTSing. Both have so much rich detail that's great for creating narrative. I have VTSed Gregory Crewdson before with very good results.

  5. Oh, my! What a neat selection of images! I particularly like the diversity of the collection - something for everybody here! Of course, my recent research has sensitized me to the interests and needs of boys. And while I think the girls would certainly get drawn in by the beauty, self-concept, social perception of women threads of the Rockwell image, your boys might "check out." They could also be too cool for the scene that appears to be unfolding in the first or reticent to share comments that might show them as overly sensitive in front of their same-sex peers. The Dali image is truly intriguing and conceptually challenging; it might take a few rounds of inventorying before they were able to begin to weave plausible narratives. Yenawine says that we want to intrigue viewers, but now stumpt them. Hmmmm. If they've dealt with surrealism in their art class, though, this could be well within their grasp. I can't image them NOT getting swept up in the ambiguity and drama of the Gregory Crewdson image, however!! Even your "hold outs" who have yet to speak might get lured in by the juxtaposition of violent tragedy and calmness. And I'm sure most are drivers (hopefully not reckless ones!!) Wow!!! Great research! Can't wait to see which you choose and how it goes!!
